Dr. Ryan Ko, Pharm.D., MPH, COP '14
After three years of waiting, Ryan was selected, as only one in every 534 people are, to be a bone marrow donor; a program he signed up for while enrolled during his time at TUC.
It isn't every day that you meet someone who is willing to give the shirt off their back in order to help a stranger in need, but according to those in the Touro community who know Ryan Ko, he is without a doubt one of those people.
Ryan attended Touro University California from 2009-2014 earning his Doctor in Pharmacy and Master in Public Health. During his time at the university he was class president and immersed himself in organizations, such as Phi Lambda Sigma and the College of Pharmacy Student Executive Board. Being a Pharmacy student, Ryan knew he would have the opportunity to make an impact on the health and care of his patients. In December 2015, he realized just how much of an impact he would actually have.
During a career fair in his second year, Ryan came across the Be the Match booth, a bone marrow registry organization that was seeking potential donors for their registry. Always willing to help others, Ryan signed up, hoping to be that one in every 534 people selected. After three years, Ryan received a call from the organization, where he was informed of a potential match for a 19 year-old woman in France who had leukemia. Without a hint of hesitation, Ryan began the blood and lab work and completed the physical exam. A month later, in December, he was asked to go forth with the donation and gladly accepted.
"It was an amazing experience and something that I will carry with me forever, knowing that I personally impacted another person's life on a whole new level," Ryan says. "You just never know when two minutes of your time could end up saving a person’s life."
The service-oriented healthcare professional hopes to inspire others, through his
impactful story, to take the time and sign up with the Be the Match organization for bone marrow registry.
